Before During and After AIDS/A Mother's Love and Memories

Written by Joan Thomas Nelson for her son; King Lee Kleski

Acknowledgements

The writing of this book has been a task that I do not take lightly, for some reason it has helped me get through a very complicated time in my life. Recalling personal experiences of my life with my son King and his amazing friends. I must give appreciation to the fact that King had a very positive effect on people.

This experience has touched me deeply and has given me an understanding of something a lot of people would not or could not understand. Writing this book is something that I could not have done alone. King’s sisters, father, stepfather, grandmother, friends and a lot of other family members have inspired me in the writing of this book.

I need to let all the people who were so supportive in King’s life know how thankful I am that they were there for him and there are many. I also would like to thank the people who were there for my family after King lost his battle with AIDS. I also am aware of the good that can come from sharing King’s story.

I especially want to thank:

My husband Richard-- Thank you for accepting my children as your family and for your love, support, and patience while I was going through the toughest time of my life. This could not have been easy for you, thank you for just being you. I love you for that.

Ivy and Lori-- my dear daughters, thank you for being there and giving King the love he so needed when he was suffering so much, and for helping and loving me. I truly love you both so much.

Bob--Thank you for the love and support you gave my daughter during a very difficult time in her life.

Philip--I want to thank you for the time you came to visit, spending time in the hospital with King, and for making him laugh. Thank you for being on the other end of the phone so many times for me to just talk about things.

John and Norman--thank you so very much. Even though you are also fighting this terrible disease, you were always there for King. I also want to thank you for the love and support you have given our family during this difficult time in our lives.

Scott--thank you for the times you were there for King, lifting his spirits the way you always had a special way of doing.

My Sister Winnie--I know we do not always get along, and that is saying it mildly, but I want to thank you for the time you took out of your life to be there with me during King’s Memorial Services. I just want you to know that I love you.

Ivan--I need to thank you for the years we spent together. It was in those years, even though they were not always the happiest, that God gave us the privilege of bringing into the world and raising three wonderful children.

Andy Ives, Ramon Martinez and the AIDS Quilt Foundation--I want to thank you for all the info you sent me about HIV/AIDS and the help that the donations for the quilt has done for so many. I also want to thank you for giving me permission to use some of that information in this book. Your emails have also helped me when I needed someone to be honest with me, thank you.

Maw!!

I am a 65 year young women. A mother, I love all my children and grandchildren with all my heart. I wrote a book about my wonderful son. This is the reason for this website.

Before During and After AIDS/A Mother's Love and Memories. I will add my daughter Ivy's review I think it explains why I wrote the book better than I.

Maw's memories of King, August 30, 2005

Reviewer: Ivory Dodds (Oldsmar, Florida) -

Maw's memories of my brother, King, were never intended to be published in a book. Jotting things down about him helped her cope. She went through several emotional stages during that time. I think she first started writing to keep King alive. Then, she was able to voice her anger on paper. She found a constructive way to release her frustrations. Ultimately, it helped her let go.

She reflected back on her journal and realized the need for a book of this nature. Many people reject or ignore the facts of AIDS. She thought her personal journal might be helpful to someone else facing a similar battle with AIDS. She shares her thought process during a trying time and offers ways for readers to reach out. It took a lot of courage to have her journal published. King is smiling.

Love you,

Ivory
